After an absence from podium since the season opener Squizzy Mills has made a welcome return to the dais.
Mid-Western Speedway, Darlington hosted round three of the Aussie Jay's Southern Speedcar Tour this past weekend. Having never hosted the Speedcars before the event was an unknown for all involved, and with the temperature reaching almost 35 it was always going to be a trying night.
Squizzy began the night in fine form leading the opening heat from start to finish. However it was not all roses. Due to the heat the track had become extremely dry and slick and the team burned two tyres.
The second heat, although all tyres were still in good condition, was not so successful. Starting from p6 heading into turn one and two on the opening lap Squizzy became an innocent victim in a small pile up. Although it was not a hard hit it was where it hit. Squizzy was unable to restart the race as the front end and a radius rod were bent.
With only 25 points up his sleeve it was going to be hard work making something from his p7 starting position. Slowly but surely Mills made his way forward, waiting patiently until there was an opening and gaining position after position. Squizzy had even managed to pull off a pass for second position with 2 laps to go but a spun car caused a caution which resulted in Squizzy restarting the final laps still in p3. The race restarted with a green, white, chequer and Mills had to settle for third. Brother-in-law Andy Pearce went on to claim round 3 with Troy Jordan in second place.
With the car undamaged and a podium finish against some tough competition and an unknown race track the team have walked away pleased with the weekend's results. Squizzy has also slotted back into the top 3 in the points chase. With 5 rounds remaining there is still plenty of time to get back to the top.
Our next event is round 4 of the Aussie Jays Southern Speedcar Tour at
Blue Ribbon Raceway, Horsham on December 27th 2014.
